Herbs for The Lungs
Though it is best known as a smart herb, Ginkgo has been used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat asthma, allergies, and coughs. Studies have shown that ginkgo can inhibit allergic response and scientists have isolated an active ingredient in ginkgo that has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Ephedra is another herb that has been used by the Chinese (who call it ma huang) and other cultures to help treat asthma and relieve bronchial spasms. Ephedra contains compounds that are the active ingredients in over-the-counter decongestants, such as the pseudoephedrine in Sudafed. (Herbalists note that ephedra should be used with caution, preferably with the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner).
Other herbs that may help to prevent or treat asthma include nettle (which reduces allergic reactions), licorice (a popular cough remedy), and mullein (which is rich in mucilage, a subtance that soothes the throat).
